| Sinkhole
is a 35mm feature film starring Bryan Marshall, Newest! Sinkhole has been acquired by Shoreline Entertainment, the sales and distribution company run by Morris Ruskin, of 'Glengarry Glen Ross' fame! As you'd expect, we're delighted to be among the impressive films on their roster. Newest! Sinkhole was nominated for Best Feature at the 2005 Ohio Independent Film Festival! We'll let you know how things work out. New! Sinkhole has won the Best Feature award at the Indie Memphis Film Festival! Thanks to everyone who voted for us, and thanks particularly Ms. Emily Trenhom and the other festival organizers. Newest! Sinkhole actor J.R. Hooper ("Poppy") has won the Best Actor Award at the Wild Rose Film Festival, in Des Moines, Iowa. Sinkhole was nominated for a total of eight awards, and also took home a Certificate of Distinctive Acheivement! Nuff said! Also, Asheville's terrific alternative paper, the Mountain Xpress, recently gave Sinkhole a very positive review. We know John Waters says filmmakers should never be friends with critics, but we at Harrow Beauty do admit a little fondness for the Xpress' Ken Hanke. An author of several texts of film biography and academia, Hanke's reviews are (in our opinion) unusually literate and thoughtful. So, hats off, Mr. Hanke! Not so New! Sinkhole has accepted an invitation to screen at the Indie Memphis Film Festival in late October. This is a festival that focuses primarily on the southeastern United States. Considering that one of the main reasons we became filmmakers was to try to correct the generally negative (and inaccurate) view of the South on film, we feel like we're in great company! Sinkhole will screen Saturday, Oct. 24, at 9 p.m. We've
also been accepted to screen at the 2004
Ohio Independent Film Festival, the only film market in the mid-West.
We'll screen there on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 4 p.m. Not
so New! Sinkhole has been accepted into the
IFP/Minneapolis
Central Standard Film Festival. A fest that specializes in
quality films from the "flyover country"
(i.e. most of the U.S.), this is a perfect opportunity for us to show
who we are and what we're about. We're particularly happy that we'll
be there with our fellow North Carolinians and good buddies, the Miles
Ahead auteurs Dylan Trivette and Matt Zboyovski. Kinda
New! Sinkhole has just been accepted into
the 2004
IFP/NY Market and Conference! This is an industry showcase
sponsored by the Independent Film Project, the same
group behind IFC, IFC Films, and other Very Important
Organizations in the industry. This is a great opportunity for "new
voices" (I guess that's us) to get in front of People Who Can Get
Things Done, and wow them. The
Market and Conference runs from Sept. 19 - 24, 2004. Also
kinda new! So, we've now had our festival
premieres on both coasts (with a temp sound mix, natch!), and both showings
-- our World Premiere in LA at Dances With Films, and our East Coast
Premiere in Manhattan with VisionFest -- were a success. Both festivals
were as classy and well-run as you'd expect from such industry veterans.
We made lots of friends, got lots of good reviews
and contacts, and as an added bonus, my script Harvestman,
won VisionFest's 1st Annual "Screenwriting Prize." Also
sorta new!
Sinkhole has accepted an invitation
to be included in the Domani Vision Society's VisionFest Film
Festival, held in Manhattan, NYC. Our showing will happen at
12:00 p.m. on June 27, 2004. This will be our "East
Coast Premiere." VisionFest is a high profile festival that will
feature the likes of Mark Wahlberg, Steven Soderbergh
and others. Simply put, VisionFest rocks. We'll be there, and hopefully
you will too. Check
it out here.
Purchase tickets for our particular program (Program 11) here. Not so new! Yep, this is it -- Sinkhole is having its World Premiere at the 7th Dances With Films Film Festival, held in Los Angeles from June 10 to 17, 2004. Called "the defiant fest of raw talent" by the Hollywood Reporter, Dances with Films is a cool fest that only features films with no "known actors, directors or producers ... period." (I guess that's us.) It's really nice to have a level playing field again, where a film is judged by how good it is, not just by who appears in it. The
event will take place Friday, June 11, at 5 p.m. at the Laemmle
Theatres in Santa Monica. Purchase tickets here.
And if you live in L.A., you've got no excuse to come out! Newish!
Sinkhole is featured in the Kodak "On
Filmmaking" supplement published in Filmmaker
Magazine, the definitive publication for indie film in
the US. Focused primarily on cinematography and the "look"
of the film, the article details how Sinkhole DP Steve
Agnew got the film to look so good on a low budget. The issue
will hit the stands in early April. Not
so sorta new!
The Sinkhole post-audio duties are now being handled by Vanessa
Lapato, last featured on many of the Farrelly Bros. movies,
as well as The Wedding Singer, From Hell and many
other fine films. She knows how to make us sound good! Not
So New!
The "work in progress screening" of Sinkhole
that coincided with the Asheville
Film Festival, on Saturday, November 8,
2003 was a complete success. Five hundred sold-out seats, great local
press, an enthusiastic Q&A session afterward -- all of it added
up to a nice moment of recognition for the Sinkhole cast & crew.
Thanks to all who attended. Rock on!
